From Softsoap(TM) to burgers and fries.... Have u seen those *itty bitty* burgers??? I've seen 'em, but won't pay for 'em. How about cars. U've all seen the "Mini-Cooper". That's like a British car had a sneeze and the Mini Cooper was the result.

I was shoppin' for Softsoap(TM) and was lookin' for the gallon size. All I could find was now 54oz, when it use to be 64 oz. The person I spoke to said that it was to "keep the same price point"... So in essence, rip off the customer... All in a way that makes the deception cool, put it in a "fancy new bottle". They (the customers) r too dumb to realize that they've been hoodwinked.

So, deception is the "new norm"... Woo hoo!!! Now, I am not advertising any product. I am using them as examples of the deception, that we; the shopping public; have to be made aware of and say "enough is enough". When I go to the store and my cereal is in a smaller box, but I'm payin' the same price, and have to go back and get more... does the store not think *I* know that they r rippin' me and the rest of the shoppers off, BIG TIME!!! Please... I'm not that unintelligent.

Corporate America needs to get a clue. Quit rippin' off the American public. We're tired of being ripped off. Could it be the start of a *DIFFERENT* "Revolution"???

The new norm??? Government has been deceiving us for years. Where have you been bud? The gub'ment is the ones that allow corporations to give us the shaft.

You make this sound like it is something new. It isn't. My mother tells me candy cars in the 40's and 50's were much larger. Even now go grab a single serving size bottle of milk at the gas station and they'be gone from 16oz to 12oz but the price didn't change.

Not everything though is the fault of the 'greedy' corporation. When manufacturing costs, the price of the products go up. As a manufacturer you have a number of options. Increase the price, decrease the product, or cut margins.

Millions have lost substantial amounts in their 401k's and IRA. Cutting margins is not going to be productive to shareholders. And whether you pay more, or get less, you're not going to get as much as you did for your money. Welcome to inflation, the cost of overspending on credit.

Mike:

Welcome to inflation, the cost of overspending on credit.

The problem w "inflation", is that the gov't controls how things r reported. I would rather have an *HONEST* reporting of inflation, than have things "-ex"ed out. That is not a fair reporting, in my view. We haven't had a fair reporting of inflation in decades. It's very sad that the gov't feels the need to continually deceive us.

That deception is then given the green light by corporations... "Hey, if the gov't can do it, we can too" attitude.

I would rather companies increase the price and keep the product the same size, then reduce the size and keep the price the same. Yeah, my IRA took a smackdown, but it should recover.

So, deception is the "new norm"...

Yep ... this started happening years ago ... when the 5 lb bags of sugar were replaced with 4 lb bags.

About 6 months ago, I noticed a reduction in our favorite ice-cream packaging, but now they're offering 20% more free.

When the ice-cream packaging first shrunk, ... we just figured that we probably needed to eat less anyway.

Um, if their cost of materials and/or labor go up, their prices will need to reflect that. Or if there are new taxes. Or if there are additional health care costs. So either they subtract the amount given and keep the price the same, or raise the price.

Or they do neither and start losing money, and soon you don't even have the option to buy Softsoap.

So you have all that information? Didn't think so.

Why do you feel entitled to something at a certain price? They're not forcing you to buy it.

Joshua: I was in business. I know cost of materials/labor etc. I'm not complainin' about the *price*, but the amount we get for the price paid. We r getting *less*. I'd rather they raise the price and keep the size the same. The same thing happened w some cereals. I use to get a 17oz box of cereal for x amount. Yet, now that same product comes in a 14oz size, but same price. Just raise the price and keep the amount the same. We (the buying public) understand things about costs. Hey, if the cable company can raise prices for doin' absolutely nothing, the grocers should be able to raise prices. I *DON'T* feel "entitled" to buy something at a certain price. The price has nothing to do with what I purchase. If they raise the price, big deal. What I don't like is for them to give me *LESS* of the product for the same price. I am very loyal w my product selections. I research companies and products and when I find great buys I go for it. Yet, quality is more important then price. If I have to pay more, big deal.

I'm with you, ADad! I used to get Pace Picante sauce at Costco. Big, 96-oz jug for like 5.49. Now, you get two jars which only total up to 84 oz. for the same price. I've noticed it on darn near everything. Take Healthy Choice manicotti for instance. You used to get three rolls, now you get 2. It's everywhere and I share your disgust. Thanks for posting this so I can sound off a little.

True TJG. I'm trying to drive less and usually ride my bike to work in the summer and shower in the cath labs shower room, but now they have started giving the floor nurses the stink eye when we use their showers and sending nasty emails. Surgery has never been open to us using their shower rooms, and I can't work a twelve hour shift stinking of funk and sweat.

I must be strange in America because I LOVE driving small cars! I feel like I have a lot more control over them and can more easily avoid being in an accident. I sometimes have to drive cars that belong to my other family members (who, unlike me, like HUGE vehicles), and it's nerve-wracking. The things are so freakin' huge that I feel like I'm halfway in the other lane and have trouble parking them. I remember the time when I was the designated driver for a bunch of my friends in a Ford Expedition. We would have been safer with one of them driving it!

Like JonesGirl said, we don't need these huge vehicles. I certainly believe that everyone is free to drive whatever vehicle they like (we all have different preferences, after all), but the idea that you MUST drive an Excursion to carry a week's worth of groceries (or, my favorite, "I'm having a baby, so I NEED the biggest SUV there is!") is just bull. My family of four (two of whom are, ahem, very large people) can fit comfortably in our 91 Loyale. It's just not necessary.

Maybe I live in an alternative universe, but, we have not noticed anything we buy to be reduced in size and only pennies higher.

I can only go by what I know....

Companies downsize the contents of their products to hide inflation. Inflation rates were calculated differently up until about 20 years ago. If those Calculations were applied to today's price increases and product downsizing--the real inflation rate in the USA would probably be over 6%.

The US Federal government changed how the inflation rate was calculated after Congress voted to give Social Security recipients and Federal pensioners raises for inflation. The US Federal Government did not want to give them such big raises so they changed the formula.

US businesses do not want people to realize that inflation is eating away the spending power of the US consumer, so they quietly shrink the contents of their products. I remember when Reece Cups were 6 oz. Now they are 4.4 oz but they charge the same for them.

Don't you just love how the Federal government and US corporations cooperate to impoverish American citizens with such sneaky tactics?

Uhh, no... What I can't stand is every month the "inflation rate" is zero (ex-food, gas, housing, etc)... Well, yeah... if u exclude items ur gonna get a *skewed* look at inflation. And the purchasing power of the dollar goes in the tank.... woo hoo. (sarcasm).

          Hi ADad,

you're right - even with our metric system in Europe, they started ripping us off with smaller sizes and same prices.

Examples: 200g of yoghurt is reduced to 175g (-25g relates to price hike of 12.5 percent), the new idea of beer producers; originally, they had cases of 30 bottles, 330mL each, they have changed the design cases to 27 bottles (meaning 10 percent price increase) - then they make special offers with 10 percent less.

The producers think, we're all stupid.

In Europe, it's EU-wide regulation that all products must have a standardized comparison price next to the original shelf price label or on the shelf label itself.

          Explanation:

20 bottles of beer, 500mL cost you 10 euros. They must declare additionally 1 Liter = 1 euro

175g Philadelphia cream cheese cost you 0.88 euros, comparision price 100g = 0.50 euros

I have also encountered rip offs with big packages or bottles.

A family likes to buy 1.5 Liter bottles, say soda pop for 1.29 euros (1 L = 0.86 euros) - a six pack of 330mL bottles are on special offer for 1.39 euros (1 L = 0.70 euros).

          Toilet paper (the biggest rip off) 16 rolls, 150 sheet per roll = 4.29 euros, Aldi's general offer 12 rolls, 200 sheets = 3.29 euros ( compare 2400 sheet = 429 ct, 100 sheet = 17.9 ct, Aldi 2400 sheet = 329 ct, 100 sheet = 13.7 ct - delta = 30 percent)

Don't they relate the price to a certain base (meaning per oz, per lbs, etc) in the U.S.?

Else, you have got to use your calculator all the time!

i dont like albertsons either too expensive same as with any of those card stores to get the deal of the week, they sell the item at cost or below and raise the price of everything else. Gotcha. That is a downside to the area you live in not to many choices.

I've found that by buying the "generic" cereals I'm saving a lot. I'm paying $1 for an 8 oz box, whereas I'd pay $3 for a 12 oz box of the name brands. Hmmm....even WITH coupons, it isn't worth it!

There r some things (cereal) I'll get in generic. Yet, there r others that I have found that I *prefer* the quality of the name brand v generic. Then there r others where I have to go w a specific brand due to an issue w salt.
