All of us, at one time or another feel *blue*. That is normal. Yet, I want to focus on a special group of people: those under 18. Yep, even kids can get depression. Depression does *not* go away. Depression can be caused by a number of things. Genetics *can* play a roll, yet, there r studies still workin' thru the info.
We all know that *puberty sucks*. That's a given. Yet, we're on the *other side* of puberty. The problem w puberty... them blasted hormones. And what's w the hair... I mean, it shows up in some really weird locations... Who the h*ll would put hair in the pits... and then there is the hair that spouts up... or is that *down* "there"??? Kids r goin' thru all sorts of changes. Mood swings... and not the *fun* kind, where u can join in and have fun too. But; especially for the young women; I mean, come on... Not only do they have hair growin' in those really weird locations, there's *blood* too... every 28 (or so) days.
The emotional toll on the kids growin' up is emense.
But, depression can happen before puberty... during puberty and afterward. Depression is an equal opportunity demon. Sometimes kids feel alone and isolate. Other times, they may act out. Other times depression can cause eating issues. Sleeping issues can also crop up. Depression can interfere w their activities. If they start thinking of themselves in a negative way, and it continues... have them talk to a professional. Since they r going thru a lot of issues "hormonally" and their brains don't fully develop until they r 25, "medicatin'" them *can* be both an option, and something to *really* be avoided. The best thing to do, is talk to someone who is a neuropsychiatrist.
If a child has a brain injury, their may not be a medication option. The best thing to do is help them learn "copin' skills". There r various ways to get them thru their depressive moments. I use various CD's. Some r ocean sounds. Some r birds (I love eagles), some r just nature sounds.
