Genealogy and Genetic predisposition

I love studying genealogy. Simply becuz who I came from tells a story, that is backed up by genetics. Genetic predisposition is something that interests me, simply becuz I am a *basket-ful* of issues. Most of my issues r neurological in nature. Ahhh, the study of the brain. I love what is left of my brain. Recall sucks; but other then that; it's "almost normal.

Studying my genealogy I have learned a great deal. And hope to learn more. Yet, it's a slow process.

So what does genealogy and genetic "predisposition" have to do with anything, u say??? Well, those 23 chromosomes that u get from both parents, that equal 46, make u who u r. As I researched my past, I found out that I have a relative that started a brewery in the midwest. Then I did a little more digging and found out that a number of my relatives were pre-disposed to becoming alcoholics. Now, knowing that I have alcoholics in my family tree, I am a bit conservative regarding how much alcohol I drink. I don't need to get "out of control" to have a good time.

Yet, I read; almost on a daily basis; the issues surrounding drunks and drunk driving. That is not how I want to leave my legacy. Don't get me wrong. I love a good beer, wine or wine cooler. What I don't like is feeling I lost my sense of control.

If u want to know about urself... study ur past. Study ur family tree. Ask questions of ur parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles about health issues they have. Start learning what things that might be common in ur family. Listen to stories... Us old people love tellin' stories...lol

Get ur cousins involved. Start sharin' info. That's kinda how I got started. Now that all my grandparents r gone, it's my responsibility to pass on what I know to my daughter. Hopefully she picks up the "bug" to study genealogy and learn about her past. She can then learn what she is predisposed to. Will it make a difference in who she marries, probably not. Yet, she will have the information, when she wants it.

Genealogy is not about studying how and when people died, but it tells a story about how they lived. I think that's kind cool That and the stories that get passed down is, in my view, *fun*!!!

Great article ADad!!! I agree with you. Making a long story short, my dad never really knew his mother. His mother gave my dad and his brother up after their father died (their father was 24 years old). They were 18 months and 3 years old. Doing a simple search on Google one day.. I found out a lot of information. I went though breast cancer and found out my dad's natural mother (I refuse to call her anything else) died of breast cancer, her sister died of brain cancer and another sister had breast cancer.

Genealogy is not about studying how and when people died, but it tells a story about how they lived. I think that's kind cool That and the stories that get passed down is, in my view, *fun*!!!

Exactly!

Thanx, Mrs D. Ur story is really interesting!!! I was just focusing on the alcohol, becuz I have written before about my neurological issues in other stories and felt it would bore people. lol. I've been trying to help my daughter understand various issues that *she* is having to deal w, yet, it wasn't until she was off at college and *certain* issues came to the surface and then she started asking questions.

You focused on alcohol (or any other issue) because we always wonder why is it so prevalent in our family. I've always wondered about medical issues that we may be predisposed to because of past family issues. This is a very thought provoking article and I'm so happy you posted it. (((ADad)))

Thanx. I tried telling my daughter about issues that *may* have a genetic component and as *most kids*, she kinda blew me off...lol. Yet, now that she's having some issues, who does she call...lol Yep. Now, she's starting to see the point that I was trying her all these yrs...lol.

I'm glad u enjoyed the article.

I know how you feel. I keep telling my daughter "I don't care if they don't recommend mammograms before a certain age. It is prevalent in our history." So, her last visit she demanded a mammogram. Kudos to her. Of course insurance did not pay but we split the cost. Early detection is key.

Mrs. D:

demanded a mammogram.

Early detection is key.

If it is *prevalent* in ur family history, it was wise of u to get ur daughter to demand a mammogram. Insurance issues can be appealed. I totally agree, early detection is key!!!

A worth while thouht; Before you get married, throw a hugh party for both families; Check them all out; See how they act, drink, dress, physically,look facial expressions etc; Not the car that they drive. Look real close; If stuff looks wacky. check it out; spend some time talking about what you see. Learn from this. Put the sex aside for a week or two. Look at the real prob. then; Before you make the hitch permanent; get tested. from allergy to genes.Life is hard; and this may sound cold; But there are millions of kids who need a good home; give that one to society.My friend just told me their son had mutated genes. Both he and his wife have them; Son has a prob. Now go find a cure. i am so sad for them; Yea!check out everything you can; you can still be lovers and love a child that needs the love real bad. Upside down comment; But to me; realistic; Knowledge is knowing before it happens.I don't know,I could be all screwed up myself;

Richard:

Check them all out; See how they act,

Ur over-complicating things. If they r family, U more than likely know *how* they act. What I am addressing is genetics, not external issues. Genetic testing is always smart if there r medical issues within the family. Genetic counseling is a valuable tool and can give u a great amount of information.

Yeah, there r a number of kids that get put up for adoption.
